Vice Squad
(2009) 6 x 60’ for Five

London’s multimillion pound sex industry is a dark and seedy world run by dangerous criminals. Hot on their trail is a group of elite police officers known as CO14, the Met Police Clubs and Vice Unit. This series has gained exclusive access to this squad as it carries out its difficult and dangerous investigations.

In the first episode an undercover CO14 officer becomes imprisoned in a Soho basement. His captors threaten him for cash as he frantically tries to escape. The officer is there to investigate an illegal ‘clip joint’, a club where men are promised cheap sex but end up being forced to pay hundreds of pounds to leave the premises after they’re threatened with violence, falsely imprisoned and blackmailed – all in return for nothing.

But, looking for sex with prostitutes doesn’t always end with the threat of violence. For some it ends with a night in a police cell. Often the Vice Squad will deploy undercover police women, to stand on street corners, in a well know red light district. It’s a tactic which always guarantees a steady stream of kerb crawling prisoners. T he Head of the Vice Unit, Richard Martin, says “it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, you catch all sorts of people and sometimes many will be driving while under the influence of drink or drugs”. Episode 1 features one such man, who appropriately has the words bad boy emblazoned across his windscreen. This kerb crawler certainly chose the wrong woman to try and buy sex from and certainly lived up to his bad boy persona.

Throughout the series we see the Vice Squad investigate the criminal activity which strays from the mainstream and follow them as they clamp down on the extreme illegal activity on London’s city streets.
