(2010) 4 x 60’ for ITV4

Road Warriors: The Extra Mile features highlights from the Road Warriors series supplemented with unseen footage which expands the original stories delving deeper into the lives of the courageous men and women who supply everything from beans to the bullets that keep the military operation in Afghanistan on the road.

Road Warriors – The Extra Mile Episode 1
In this episode previously unseen footage explores the role of the Apache Attack Helicopter in safeguarding the convoys, alongside their own Force Protection. Lieutenant Jack Bellfield never expects a smooth ride when delivering essential supplies to British Bases in Nad-e-Ali. But when the journey is delayed while Taliban bombs are cleared, Jack and his comrades realise that sooner or later on this mission they will have to fight for their lives.

Road Warriors – The Extra Mile Episode 2
In episode 2 the unsung heroes of the relentless fighting in Afghanistan embark on a four day mission to resupply British bases at Musa Qala. When a roadside bomb destroys one of the Road Warrior’s trucks, engaged-to-be-married Lance Corporals Lisa and Karl realise just how fragile their hopes of future happiness could be. But the convoy pushes on through appalling terrain and against determined Taliban attempts to stop it.

Road Warriors – The Extra Mile Episode 3
This episode features Operation Commander Major Macintyre’s final mission in charge of the men and women who risk their lives delivering supplies and equipment to frontline troops in war-torn Afghanistan and follows his successor, Major Jackie Fletcher, as she prepares to take over the reigns of command. Also explored is the crucial role of the British Spy Planes that provide the convoys with life-saving intelligence about enemy activity.

Road Warriors - The Extra Mile Episode 4
The final episode reveals where it all began for the Road Warriors, on the snowy wastes of Salisbury Plain. It was the training and friendships forged here that would carry them through the relentless challenges of their Afghanistan tour of duty. As the six month tour comes to an end there are emotional reunions with loved ones at home – and wedding bells for Lance Corporals Lisa and Karl, who braved the dust and dangers of Afghanistan together.
